Besides Vim and Emacs, that’s also why many people use VS Code or other editors.
Many people use other languages alongside R, and having a single IDE that “speaks” all these languages natively is something you shouldn’t undervalue. RStudio still has a slight edge in some domains (its R Notebook integration is obviously second to none, and so is its Shiny integration), but ease and speed of editing are things that many people value, and both Emacs and Vim have it beat there - if you spend the time to get proficient.įurthermore, while RStudio does support other languages, this support will always be second-rate.

In particular, both Vim and Emacs are extremely powerful editors for professional users, and both have excellent R support. RStudio is definitely an amazing IDE, but like all applications it has both strengths and weaknesses.
